A major composer in his time and unanimously acknowledged as a leading 18^th-century violinist, Giuseppe Tartini is as fascinating as he is little known.

Judged by Leonardo Eulero to be the greatest composer of his time, and unanimously acknowledged as a leading 18^th-century violinist, Giuseppe Tartini is as fascinating as he is little known. He left more than 420 compositions, most of which remain unpublished to this day, characterised by an intensity of expression that can only be fully appreciated if performed with absolute precision and elegance. Divided between the rational demands of teaching, acoustic studies and explorations both in the popular musical tradition and in the sphere of metaphysics, Tartini reserves constant surprises for his listener and, for anyone who is interested in cultural history, a chance to observe the quite numerous characteristic contradictions of the Enlightenment in music. This essay examines his life, at times adventurous, at others sedentary, and takes the reader beyond the traditional anecdotes that bind the composer to the all-too famous “Trillo del diavolo” sonata for violin and basso continuo.

Sergio Durante, was born in Padova in 1954, he studied music and musicology at Bologna’s University and Conservatory. After many years as a professional flautist and professor, Sergio Durante focused on musicology: he began with the music of 17-18th centuries and then he entertained many topics. From 1987, Durante taught Musical’s Critics and Aesthetics at the School of musical palaeography and philology in Cremona; From 199, he taught Musical Philology in the University of Padova where he was nominated full professor in 2000. Durante’s essays (approximately around 70 essays) have been published in several languages and regard the history of the italian musical theatre in 18th century, aspects and theory of the opera, ethnomusicology, electronic music, Mozart’s studies and Tartini’s studies. Among his most famous works, there are  the studies on Mozart and the 18th Century (Lucca, L.I.M., 2007) and the first edition of the autograph of the Clemenza di Tito di W.A. Mozart (Kassel etc., Bärenreiter, 2009).
