Zeffirelli: the Theater as a great family
From a very young age, Franco Zeffirelli experiences the theater as his elective home. For him it will never be a mere place of work, but a home under whose roof affections intertwine. There he establishes those passionate human relationships for which he will be regretted.
His theater is that of his favorite divas, from Anna Magnani to Maria Callas, but it is also that of the multitude of prop makers, stagehands, seamstresses, electricians, all of whom he called by name and invested with a special role. The photographs testify his way of approaching performers, extras and behind-the-scenes figures: hugs, smiles, playful winks. So many in the spaces of the Scala stage set remember him as the most generous interlocutor they have ever met there.
Zeffirelli created great shows thanks to his human warmth, a qwirk that allowed him to get the maximum effort from his collaborators. Present everywhere, from props, to tailoring, in carpentry as well as on stage, he was part of the great family of the workers, sharing their toil and arousing their enthusiasm.
