On the 50th anniversary of his disappearance

On the 50th anniversary of his disappearance, the Teatro alla Scala pays tribute to Victor de Sabata (1892-1967) with a photographic exhibition in order to remind the artist who was a very important director at la Scala of which, he was also, Artistic Superintendent for a quarter of a century, since 1930.
Triestino, who became Milanese at eight year old, was a great composer, and also a great interpreter of Wagner, Puccini, Verdi,and he enjoyed the greatest consideration abroad.

In 1951, thanks to Victor De Sabata, was decided that December 7th, the day of the celebrations for Sant’Ambrogio, patron of Milan, would have been adopted as the day of the “Prima della Scala. in the past years, the day of the opening show was on December 26th, Santo Stefano.

De Sabata lived in the age of the great voices – Callas, Tebaldi, Corelli, Monaco – sadly he had to stop his incredible career for health reasons in 1953,due to a heart attack happened during the engraving of the legendary Tosca (Callas, Di Stefano, Gobbi, Orchestra and Choir of the Scala).

The exhibition, situated in the Ridotto dei palchi of the Theater,near the statue of the artist himself, sculpted by Igor Mitoraj in 1993 – kind gift from Milano per la Scala – will remain open to visitors of the Museum and to the audience of the theater during the breaks, until January 7
